Introduction Long ago, Montana was very different from the way it is today. The first people who lived in North America are known as Native Americans. There are many different cultures of Native Americans. In Montana there are 7 different tribes of Native Americans and they each have their own culture. Culture refers to the people's way of life. Each culture was affected by the natural resources that were available to them. Natural resources were used as tools for survival providing necessities such as as food, clothing, and shelter. Today, we will be detectives who are exploring these tribal histories to find out how each tribe lived and survived everyday life.
Social Studies StandardsContent Standard 3- Students apply geographic knowledge and skills (ex location, Place, human/environment interactions, movement, and regions) Content Standard 6—Students demonstrate an understanding of the impact of human interaction and cultural diversity on societies. Benchmark 4: Compare and illustrate the unique characteristics of American Indian tribes and other cultural groups in Montana. Essential Understanding 1: There is great diversity among the 12 tribal Nations of Montana in their languages, cultures, histories and governments. Each Nation has a distinct and unique cultural heritage that contributes to modern Montana. Essential Understanding 2: There is great diversity among individual American Indians as identity is developed, defined and redefined by entities, organizations and people. A continuum of Indian identity, unique to each individual, ranges from assimilated to traditional. There is no generic American Indian.
Technology StandardsContent Standard 3- A student must apply digital tools and skills with creativity and innovation to express him/herself, construct knowledge and develop products and processes.
Content Standard 4: A student must possess a functional understanding of technology concepts and operations. Benchmark 2: Use a variety of digital tools to create a product.
Benchmark 3: Communicate the results of research and learning with others using digital tools. Essential Learning Expectation B: Use online source(s) to access information, with appropriate citation.
Differentiation: Exceptional learners who are unable to complete their portion of the assignment may participate by being placed with a group of 3 students based on their different needs and abilities. For gifted and talented students I would adapt this lesson by allowing them to add a few more activities such as adding additional media such as music and language from their assigned tribe to the slideshow presentation.
Objectives: I want my students to realize how much Native American culture contributes to the history of Montana and that each Tribe is different and has a unique culture.
The Task The task of your group is to use Internet resources to discover as much as you can about the culture you were assigned. Record the information on your graphic organizer. The information that your group finds will be used to create a presentation to our follow detectives. Each detective in the group will be assigned two of the categories to research. Each individual will need to share one interesting fact about their assigned tribe as well.

IMPORTANT: Keep track of the sites that you visit and the images that you save by copying and pasting the urls into a word document. It is very important to give credit to your sources.
The Process
1. First you will e assigned to a team of 3 students
2. Choose 2 categories to research (ex. Diet and transportation ,etc)
3. Follow the assigned links to find your information
4. Once you have the required information that answers the questions to your assigned categories you need to hand write them on a sheet of notebook paper.
5. After all the information has been collected, take some time to look over each other’s answers and check for any spelling/grammar mistakes.
6. Now you will make a Microsoft Power point presentation, ask Ms. Kennedy for further assistance if needed. Add pictures and graphics from http://free-clipart.net/.
7. We will present our finished presentations as a group

Conclusion
Each individual should have learned that there are 7 different and unique Native American Tribes in Montana and that they each have their own history and culture. Because there is this much Native American diversity in Montana, can you imagine how much there is throughout the United States? There are over 310 federally recognized tribes in the United States and just like the tribes in Montana; they too are all unique in their cultures and history.
